Mobile phones are often looked at as a fairly recent gadget. However they have been freely available in the UK for over twenty years.
During December 1999 and December 2000 a total of 46,000 users a day joined the UK mobile phone network and more than 5.1 million phones were bought during the 2000 Christmas period.
